10 Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Actors 2015
In 2015, Hollywood gave us some of the biggest and brightest films of the year, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens serving as a phenomenal final number.
However, not all of the stars of this year’s films deserved what they earned. Many celebrities in Hollywood earned way more than they ought to have when one examines what their films actually brought in at the box office. Here are the ten stars who were way overpaid in 2015, based on salary and sales data from Forbes.
10. Tom Cruise
Mission Impossible might have once been quite the powerhouse Hollywood franchise, but interest in it is waning. This year’s installment didn’t bring in quite what it used to at the box office, leading some to wonder if Cruise still deserves his superstar salary.
9. Ben Affleck
Although next year’s Dawn of Justice is sure to get Affleck off of this list in 2016, this was not a good year at the box office for the future Batman actor.

8. Brad Pitt
This year’s Beyond The Sea, where Pitt starred alongside and was directed by his real life wife Angelina Jolie, was a colossal critical and commercial failure.
7. Channing Tatum
Tatum is considered to be one of Hollywood’s biggest leading men. However, in 2015, none of his films managed to crack the top three at the box office, leading many to wonder if he actually has as much draw as he’s purported to have.
6. Christian Bale
When Bale was still the Dark Knight, he had amazing box office draw. These days, however, Bale has been starring in more independent and less commercially viable films, leading many to wonder if he should still command a blockbuster salary.
5. Will Smith
Once upon a time, Smith’s big budget action films, such as Independence Day, were always guaranteed money makers. Although he’s still making high-budget action movies, they don’t have the draw they used to have. Films like After Earth have been deemed massive box office blunders.
4. Liam Neeson
2015 saw the action star in one major film, the abysmally unpopular Run All Night.Neeson will need another smash hit like Taken if he wants to get himself off of this list in 2016.
3. Will Ferrell
The funny man is usually automatic box office gold. However, both critics and moviegoers panned the wholly unoriginal Get Hard, which he starred in alongside comedian Kevin Hart. The film was a failure at the box office.
2. Denzel Washington
Washington might be a critically acclaimed actor, but he hasn’t had a successful box office winner since 2012’s Flight.
1. Johnny Depp
He’s one of the world’s most famous faces, but he doesn’t make the hits that he used to. In 2015, Depp received more attention for his tumultuous personal life than he did for his movies. Mortdecai was supposed to be a massive hit, but fans and critics balked at the cheesy dialogue and the derivative story line.
Fascinatingly, no female performers made the top ten of the most overpaid actors of 2015. However, women dominated the most profitable actor list, with starlets like Mila Kunis, Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone earning top spots. It will be interesting to see what this list looks like in 2016 and whether or not these poor-performing stars can actually break even at the box office in the coming year.
