You may have heard that tragedy either tears a family apart, or brings them closer. In the case of rapper Snoop Dogg and his wife, their daughter Cori’s lupus diagnosis saved their troubled marriage and brought them closer than ever.
When Cori was still a little girl she began losing weight, losing hair, no one knew what was wrong with her. She saw countless doctors, her mother Shante and father Snoop say they cried 1000 times. Eventually she was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythmatosus, commonly known as lupus, and the heartbreak of understanding autoimmune disease, and what it would mean in their daughter’s life, and to them as a family, brought them together, it’s a battle best fought as a team whenever you can.
SLE, or lupus, is the leading cause of stroke, kidney disease, and heart disease in women, it affects more women than men, and more women of African and Asian descent than other races, it’s known as a young woman’s disease, the highest number of new diagnoses is for those aged 15-45. Lupus can be diagnosed with blood tests and has many symptoms, not all those with the disease will have all the symptoms, it varies by individual.
The symptoms of lupus can mimic those of other ailments, so often people put off going to the doctor. Symptoms include, but are not limited to:
- Extreme fatigue
- Hair loss
- Inflammation and pain in joints
- Facial Sores
- Raynaud’s phenomenon (fingers turning white or blue when cold)
- Sun or light sensitivity
- Swelling in feet, hands, and face
Cori’s illness pulled her family back together, made them stronger, and at present the 15 year old girl is doing well. She plays sports, is on the honor roll, and is following in her dad’s footsteps making her own music.
