President Obama On Confederate Flag At Eulogy For Rev Clementa Pinckney:
On Monday the White House announced that President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Charleston, SC, Friday to attend the funeral services of Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, who was murdered along with eight other parishioners at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church last week.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest stated, “On Friday, June 26th, the President and Vice President will travel to Charleston, South Carolina, to attend the funeral services of Rev. Clementa Pinckney, where President Obama will deliver the eulogy. Further details about the President’s travel to South Carolina will be made available in the coming days.”
During the president’s 2008 campaign President Obama and the First Lady met Pinckney for the first time. The president has expressed his grief over the deaths of the nine church members in the Emanuel AME incident, especially Pinckney; in his statement after Wednesday’s shooting he said, “We knew their pastor Rev. Clementa Pinckney, 41, was leading a Bible group when a white gunman opened fire, when he, along with eight others, gathered in prayer and fellowship, and were murdered last night, and to say our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families and their community doesn’t say enough to convey the heartache and the sadness and the anger that we feel.”
Biden also said, “He was a good man, a man of faith, a man of service who carried forward Mother Emanuel’s legacy as a sacred place promoting freedom, equality, and justice for all.”
Additional details of the president and vice president’s trip are expected to be released in the coming days.
