NYC Activist Michael Meyers Says We Must Stop Portraying Black Men as Moral Monsters of Our Society
In a heated conversation Monday, social activist Michael Meyers called Bill O’Reilly and his network Fox news, claiming they have a pattern of accusing and demonizing black men. “You are painting black men as society’s moral monsters,” said Meyers, who heads New York Civil Rights Coalition. Bill O’Reilly believes that crimes committed by black Americans, according to the latest 2013 FBI data, African-Americans commit 54% of crimes even though they account for only 13% of the total population. Bill O’Reilly said that Mr. Meyers, as president of the New York Civil Rights Coalition, blames him and other Fox news anchors for demonizing African-Americans.
Michael Meyers believes that crime is an individual thing, not a racial thing or according to skin color, so there is no such thing as black male problems, like there once was Italian or Irish male problems.
Bill O’Reilly believes Michael Meyers is making a fundamental mistake and he provided some historical evidence, that there are problems with a variety of groups for example; Muslim extremists that only can be resolved by law-biding Muslims, Italian Mafia, and IRA terrorists.
Michael Meyers said that crime has been out of control, and the majority of the crimes in America are committed by white people, not blacks, and if any crimes are committed it is because of segregation, but O’Reilly believes it’s segregation by choice.
Meyers said, “You are painting black men as society’s moral monsters,”
O’Reilly responded, “I’m not doing that, and I’m going to continue to report the truth.”
