SONG OF THE DAY: The Supremes- Where Did Our Love Go

SONG OF THE DAY

The Supremes
Where Did Our Love Go

The Supremes was Motown’s premier act and to this day America’s most successful vocal group with 12 number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100.  At their peak in the mid-1960s, the Supremes and the Beatles were the most popular musical acts.

In 1960 Diana Ross, the last member to get recruited, asked an old neighbor, ‘Miracles’ lead singer Smokey Robinson, if he could land them a meeting with Motown executive Berry Gordy.  Unfortunately the meeting didn’t lead to a record deal but the group did perform hand claps background vocalists for Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells and The Temptations. A year later the girls were officially signed to the label with the new name The Supremes.

Between 1961 and 1963 the group was known as the “no-hit Supremes” but in summer of 1964 that all changed with the release of their single “Where Did Our Love Go.”  By 1965, the Supremes were international stars. They toured the world, becoming almost as popular abroad as they were in the US.

Almost immediately after their initial number-one hits, they recorded songs for motion picture soundtracks, appeared in the 1965 film Beach Ball, and endorsed dozens of products, at one point having their own brand of bread.  The Supremes’ cross-cultural success effectively paved the way for the mainstream success of contemporaneous label mates such as the Temptations, the Four Tops and The Jackson 5.

Lyrics:

Baby, baby
Baby don’t leave me
Ooh, please don’t leave me
All by myself

I’ve got this burning, burning
Yearning feelin’ inside me
Ooh, deep inside me
And it hurts so bad

You came into my heart
So tenderly
With a burning love
That stings like a bee

Now that I surrender
So helplessly
You now wanna leave
Ooh, you wanna leave me

Ooh, baby, baby
Where did our love go?
Ooh, don’t you want me
Don’t you want me no more
Ooh, baby

Baby, baby
Where did our love go
And all your promisses
Of a love forever more

I’ve got this burning, burning
Yearning feelin’ inside me
Ooh, deep inside me
And it hurts so bad

Before you won my heart
You were a perfect guy
But now that you got me
You wanna leave me behind
(Baby, baby) ooh baby

Baby, baby don’t leave me
Ooh, please don’t leave me
All by myself

Ooh, baby, baby
Where did our love go?
