SONG OF THE DAY : Tina Turner – What’s Love Got to Do with It

SONG OF THE DAY

Tina Turner, What’s Love Got to Do with It

Tina Turner, born Annie Mae Bullock in Tennessee, began singing as a teen, and joined Ike Turner’s touring show as a backup vocalist. At the age of 20, Turner was the star of the show, the attention-grabbing focal point for an incredibly smooth-running soul show spectacular. In the 1960’s the show’s name was changed from “Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm” to the “Ike & Tina Turner Revue.”

A string of hits soon followed: “A Fool in Love”(1960), “River Deep – Mountain High”(1966), “Proud Mary”(1971), and “Nutbush City Limits”(1973). Despite the couple’s success Turner became frustrated with her husband’s abusive behavior and left him in the mid-1970s.

The singer had some challenging years of going solo after the divorce but in 1984, signed with Capitol Records, Turner released the album Private Dancer. It produced seven singles including: “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, “Better Be Good To Me”, “Private Dancer” and “Let’s Stay Together” (cover originally recored by Al Green). The New York Times called the record a “landmark [in the] evolution of pop-soul music.”

Lyrics:

You must understand
That the touch of your hand
Makes my pulse react
That it’s only the thrill
Of boy meeting girl
Opposites attract

It’s physical
Only logical
You must try to ignore
That it means more than that

[Chorus:]
Oh what’s love got to do, got to do with it
What’s love but a second hand emotion
What’s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart
When a heart can be broken

It may seem to you
That I’m acting confused
When you’re close to me
If I tend to look dazed
I’ve read it someplace
I’ve got cause to be

There’s a name for it
There’s a phrase that fits
But whatever the reason
You do it for me

[Chorus]

I’ve been taking on a new direction
But I have to say
I’ve been thinking about my own protection
It scares me to feel this way

[Chorus]

What’s love got to do, got to do with it
What’s love but a sweet old fashioned notion
What’s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken
