The Harsh Truth About The Effect Of Puppy Mills And The Amazing Rescue Story Of A Very Fortunate Puppy Named Coconut
When considering adding a new pet to the family, it is important to do research prior to purchase. The reason being, that many places sell puppies that originate from puppy mills. These mills are large-scale breeding operations where the animal’s health and comfort are not a major concern. Instead, the almighty dollar reigns supreme. One example of a dog that made it out of a puppy mill and is now in a much better situation is Coconut. She was born at a mill in Michigan where she lived much of her life until finally being rescued by the ASPCA.
Upon being taken in, she was unable to immediately be adopted because of her temperament. Coconut was extremely under socialized. This caused her to be very defensive and on edge around humans and other pets. She was quick to strike as unfit for family life. After being rescued, Coconut began quite a journey thanks to the ASPCA’s Rehabilitation Center. They began slowly socializing her, and the results were astounding. The center noticed results in a matter of weeks.
A happy, loving dog was hidden by a rough exterior that was created by her time in the puppy mill. After six weeks of rehab, Coconut was ready to find a forever home. These mills often sell to local and national pet stores. Since health is not a major concern at these establishments, many of these puppies are malnourished. Hopefully by adopting we can drive down the demand for these mill-bred dogs and force their breeders to change their operations for the better.
Thanks to the center located in New Jersey, our friend Coconut is now living with a family who smothers the pooch with treats and love. With this story in mind, it is important to rescue dogs from situations such as these. Adoption gives pet owners the ability to save a life while enhancing their own at the same time. Many of these animals have the potential to be put down if they are not rehabilitated and eventually adopted. Choosing adoption over buying can truly save lives. The good deed will not go unnoticed. These animals will pay you back with unconditional love.
